24 Hours with Marion Philpotts Miller

Marion Philpotts-Miller’s interior design prowess is well known. But what goes on behind the scenes? “We start the morning with dog kisses and a cup of coffee, surrounded by nature and a view. It doesn’t get any better than that. It is not the house but the place we live — Tantalus is dreamy,” she shares. From morning rituals to mood-board discussions, Philpotts-Miller tours us around her day.

Thankfully not a regular occurrence, I discover strong winds knocked down a tree onto the driveway leading to a power outage, which in turn disrupted the water supply. My husband Jeff steps out to take a look. My day officially begins in the sunroom, where I enjoy mornings with a cup of coffee, my furry companions, and an inspiring design book. I like to “read” pictures. Frequently, I peruse my emails to kickstart my workday, immersing myself in design projects. This space is where work feels like play, and it’s truly my sanctuary of happiness.

Now at the office. The simple task of pinning up our ideas and concepts on a “mood board” is a truly delightful process. Work isn’t always in Hawai‘i though. One of my more recent trips included a jaunt to Chicago for a project. Travel is inspirational albeit sometimes demanding on the schedule and body. But seeing new things when traveling is a great way to stay vital.

Mid-day, I pop into Bloom next door. In a partnership with my daughter, Maree Miller, and my brother Billy, we started the concept of artful flowers during the pandemic with a talented team.

I then make my way for a quick day trip to Hotel Wailea to preview our model rooms. The suites resonate with rest, relaxation and rejuvenation embodying a playful distinctive vision infused and focused on local art, craftsmanship and culture.

By early evening, I return to O‘ahu in time for a late dinner.
