…with Jill DeGroff
Over the past two decades, my husband dale has dedicated his life’s work to the craft of the cocktail and reviving the profession of bartending. his success in parlaying a bartender job into a glamorous career traveling around the world to make cocktails certainly has its perks. One of them is that I have been able to accompany him on many of these wonderful trips.
Lush Life, Portraits from the Bar is a tribute to my husband, and the many talented people he has introduced me to on his never-ending quest for the perfect cocktail. the illustrations I did for it portray the mixologists, musicians, proprietors, writers, as well as the romantics, wanderers and dreamers that inspired both of us along the way. hawai’i will always have a place in my heart. Not only is it one of the most beautiful places in the world, but one where I can be certain that I will find all of these characters! during our most recent visit, we were seated outside of the halekulani and I treated myself to an “asian honey” cocktail. as the sun went down over waikiki, we listened to music influenced by polynesian folk songs and cowboy swing. the hula dancer, Kanoe Miller, magically evoked long-lost spirits dancing beneath an ancient hau tree… as I was transported to another era. Before I knew it, this sketch was in my hand.
