Malie Organics uses coffee fruit’s perk in skin care
Beyond its ability to perk up the mind, the value of coffee fruit as key to beautiful skin has been understood for centuries. Coffee pickers in South America have long noted the correlation between handling coffee cherries and the soft, youthful state of their hands despite their work in the field and attendant exposure to the elements.
Despite the coffee fruit’s antioxidant properties, much of its beneficial pulp has been routinely discarded in the process of separating the pulp from the precious beans that go into making a prized cup of coffee.
In keeping with its mission of merging beauty with sustainable practices, Kauai-based Malie Organics now offers a combination of beauty and health inside and out with the launch of KonaRed, a wellness drink made of hydrosol liquid extract from the coffee fruit, as well as a line of anti-aging skin-care products utilizing Hawaiian coffee fruit extract as the main ingredient. It takes 15 pounds of whole fruit to create one pound of the concentrated liquid extract.
The products include an organic, anti-aging, firming elasticity cream ($56) and organic, anti-aging body polish ($45).
To back the claims, KonaRed has been tested by Brunswick Laboratories, an industry provider of independent analytical services. Administering the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity Test, KonaRed was shown to possess an antioxidant content significantly higher, at 6,800 ORAC, than blueberries and pomegranates, fruits known for their antioxidant properties.
Hawaiian coffee fruit extract comprises five phenolic antioxidant acids – chlorogenic, caffeic, ferulic, quinic and trigonelline – that help to neutralize the free radicals that cause cellular damage, while repairing existing damage.
In addition, all Malie products are free of parabens, petroleum, animal byproducts and phosphates. It all adds up to ample grounds to give these coffee-based products a try.
Cosmetics companies have begun infusing coffee into lip balms, for its ability to protect ultra-sensitive skin against UVA and UVB sun damage.
Coffee grounds effectively slough off dead skin cells and promote cell regeneration, making it great for exfoliating spa treatments.
Caffeine constricts the skin’s blood vessels and aids as a quick remedy for problem cellulite areas.
Studies have shown that regular coffee drinking reduces the risk of Parkinson’s disease, colon cancer and cirrhosis.
Many popular pain and headache medications contain caffeine as one of their principal ingredients.
