Freeze Your Excess Off
GOODBYE JELLY BELLY. No more love handles. No matter how hard you work out, there always seems to be that little “pinch” that just won’t go away. Now you can freeze off that excess fat through a novel process called CoolSculpting by Zeltiq. For those who cringe during episodes of Nip/Tuck, fear not: This is a non-invasive procedure that selectively reduces fat layers in problem areas through cooling technology.
“The machine cools the skin and fat to very close to freezing, without burning the skin or damaging it,” explains Dr. Shim Ching, a cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon at The Queen’s Medical Center. “By cooling the skin down, the fat cells undergo a change. Over the course of two to four months following the treatment, the fat cells gradually disappear.”
According to Ching, this procedure is intended for slim people with small pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.
People who are considerably overweight or those with excess loose skin are not considered good candidates for this procedure.
For now, the device is used to treat the abdomen and flank areas. Side effects are “very mild” and include redness, swelling, numbness and tingling in the area. Cost starts at $800 per area, and the procedure takes about an hour.
With a rapidly growing clientele seeking laser liposuction, Ching notes that more and more are opting out of surgery when approaching smaller pockets of fat.
Further, Zeltiq’s recent FDA approval will surely make it this year’s hot cosmetic improvement trend.
