Succumbing to peer pressure (imagined or otherwise), I’m finally plunging into the world of social media—OK, more like dipping my pinky toe—with my first blog entry ever. Thus far, Sarah H. and Catherine C. have been doing a great job over here at HILuxury HQ, but then I saw that no one had yet mentioned the great little tea place that recently opened at Ward Warehouse. So here I go:
The Monarch Tea Room is a charming gem of a find nestled at the back of Na Mea Hawai‘i. As its name implies, the room is filled with portraits of Hawai‘i royals, lending an air of regality that often goes with having a spot of tea. Co-owner Liza Yunis is a bona fide tea maven (as in Tea Masterclass-certified), having attended tea workshops in England, who brings global teas that made the cut into her tearoom. Here, you’ll find flavors and varieties you won’t come across anywhere else in town, with equally unique names.
They accept walk-ins of course, but your best bet is to make a reservation. I popped in with my daughter last weekend—they actually have keiki tea service, serving up tiers of kid-friendly bites—thinking we could have an impromptu tea party. However, every table was already set up for service. Yunis must’ve read the disappointment in my tot’s face—easily remedied with a decadent mini-chocolate cupcake, which she brought out from the pastry cabinet. And speaking of baked goods, they even have freshly made meringue. You know, the bigger-than-your-hand kind you find at patisseries across Europe—a small detail that ultimately won me over. What can I say? I like a lot of sugar with my tea.
