CHANGE. It’s the one constant in life, right? As I write this, we have just entered 2020 and I’m deep in the period of reflection and introspection that occurs every New Year. This time, it’s more than the seasonal resolutions that are on my mind. It’s the transition that we’re undergoing at HILuxury. We bade a heartfelt farewell to Margie Jacinto last issue, and as we send this issue out into the world, we welcome our new senior editorial director, Max Prince. Like the New Year, this is a period of evolution for us. We are very excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.
The future is certainly bright for our cover story subject, Ian Anthony Dale, who spoke with writer Yu Shing Ting about his own life changes. The actor recently did double-duty on Hawaii Five-0, both acting in and directing an episode set to air on Feb. 7. He also launched 20K—a production and development company that aims to highlight stories focused on inclusivity and diversity. Read more about it in “Here’s the Dale,” on page 104.
This issue features other stories that highlight change and transition. We talk to Mike B. Pietsch about his new role at Title Guaranty (“Making Waves,” page 46) and explore Chai Chaowasaree’s ever-evolving menus (“Chai Time,” on page 138). We look at Mark Bradford’s perspective-changing artwork (“Making His Mark,” on page 54) and architect Alwyn Trigg-Smith’s transformation of a unique home in Nu‘uanu (“Pole Position,” on page 92). The common thread: change is inevitable.
But, if you’re surrounded by excellent people, change is also a golden opportunity. That’s how I feel about our HILuxury team: creative director Gina Lambert, art director Xenia Ing, fashion editor Yu Shing Ting, all of our writers, photographers and of course, our publisher, Linda Woo. Together, with eyes focused on the future, we’ll work to bring you more of the HILuxury you love. Enjoy.
