Editor’s Note

editorAll my holiday decor has been packed away at last. Admittedly, my Christmas tree and garlands lingered well after KSSK stopped playing carols and countdowns from Times Square—shot from almost every angle imaginable—stopped running on television. Part of it is because I procrastinate, but it’s also because I do love seeing my home festooned with shiny ornaments, chenille throw on the couch (Yes, I know it’s too hot for a 5-pound blanket but who cares?), and cards from friends and family out on display for those few weeks. But as much as I hated seeing the holidays come and go, I was also ready to say farewell to 2016 and move onto 2017.

So here we are, well into the new year, with plenty to look forward to. And our latest issue of HILuxury is filled with everything and everyone to keep you inspired to strive for whatever your goal is for the months ahead.

First, we head to The Valley Isle to pay the legendary Shep Gordon a visit. Maui’s unofficial pope—at least according to chef Mark Ellman—gives us the grand tour of his piece of paradise, while writer Deborah Caulfield Rybak delves into the entertainment guru’s inner workings. Read her story, “What Happened on Maui,” on pg. 108 to find out more.

And while Gordon spent his early days in California before planting roots here in Hawai’i, local boy Tim Alexander has done just the opposite. Growing up in Honolulu, Alexander is now living his dream in San Francisco (at least when he’s not traveling for his job) working at Industrial Light & Magic as a visual effects supervisor. Don’t let his shy demeanor fool you— the guy has some serious bragging rights (BAFTA award? Check. Oscar nod? Covered.) should he decide to toot his own horn. Read “Image is Everything” on pg. 130 and discover what else he’s been working on. Actually, he’s not allowed to divulge such details, but I have a feeling The Force is with him.

We also were so very fortunate to become part of someone else’s dream. HILuxury was able to give aspiring model Kayla Cabalquinto her very own fashion spread—her one wish. Complete with our glam squad and the team at Make-A-Wish, Kayla strikes a pose (make that, several poses) in style. See how it all turned out on pg. 134.

If these three don’t inspire you to pursue your own passions, I’m not sure who will … So get out there and make the most of 2017. Enjoy the issue!
