A variety of pools across the island of Oahu set the backdrop for the editorial images in this inaugural fashion spread of HI Luxury magazine. Kelly Klein, author of the infamous coffee table book “POOLS,” states that “pools represent the good life, nostalgia, feelings of health, and youth.” We agree this parallels to what living in Hawaii also represents.
The swimming pool is an icon for American social life and living near the ocean takes this notion one step further. Locals are “lucky we live Hawaii,” for we are surrounded by one large pool filled with not only coral, salt, reef, and waves, but an entire host of memorable images of living, playing and working in this paradise we call home.
In this issue, we visit the Manoa district public pool, a Hawaii Kai family’s liquid playground, an ocean front estate, the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and round out the road trip with a stop at the Sandy Beach tide pools.
Following fashion and it being the height of beach season, it was only natural to feature swim-inspired looks. As retro elements were apparent inspirations on summer runways around the world, the theme of pools was easier to play into as was the 1970s era of pool party glamour and luxury.
Pools and the beautiful people who swim, skinny dip, pose, fall, or get pushed into them emulate the passion and spirit of Hawaii.
