ABOUT THE SETTING

Our creative team was immediately intrigued with the idea of shooting our fashion spread in a setting not typically seen in Hawai’i. So, when the notion of staging at the abandoned building that once housed the MidWeek and Honolulu Star-Bulletin printing press arose, interest piqued.

As our in-house fashion stylists pulled clothes for the two models, one thing became very clear: This Spring is all about bright, bodacious colors. Contrasting this with the stark and desolate nature of a location with no shortage of bare cement, the deal was sealed.

An interesting tidbit for you to utter at the next cocktail fĂȘte: Built in 1987, the now-defunct Luluku Road printing facility in Kane’ohe is a 20,000-square foot warehouse constructed with a floor specially poured in order to support the weight of the press-and keep it from moving but a millimeter during printing. Additionally, a rear wall that runs the length of the building was also specially poured (on the ground) and ultimately raised by crane into an upright position.

The Goss newspaper presses, state-of-the-art in the mid-1980s, could churn out 30,000 newspaper copies per hour.

Nowadays, MidWeek and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser are printed at the company’s far more modern facility in Kapolei. Reportedly costing $82 million (when it was built in 2004), the new press offers a crisp, modern look; something we will consider for a future backdrop-when fashion turns to subdued blues and grays, no doubt.
