    The Man in Black

By: Nadine Kam Photos By: Harold Julian

Even before Johnny Cash cemented his identity as the “Man In Black” with that album’s release in 1971, he was known for walking the dark side of life. His sartorial sense grew naturally out of his concern for the ones held back in life. As he sang, “I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town.”

    ABOUT THE SETTING

The idea of doing a fashion feature around the theme “The Man In Black” is something HILuxury Creative Director Gina Lambert wanted to do for a while. When she saw 53 By The Sea, she knew she’d found the perfect backdrop for this fashion story. Perched above the ocean in an iconic location, the restaurant’s views of Diamond Head, coupled with cozy nooks, a sweeping grand staircase and the elegant T’s at 53 Lounge, with its Italian-made Fazioli piano, provide patrons with the perfect place for their fine dining experience. And, don’t forget the menu. Chef Hiroshi Hayakawa’s Italian offerings focus on bringing local ingredients, the finest hand-cut meats and—owing to its oceanside locale—the freshest seafood selections to the table. Pair it all with selections from a wine and spirits list that was personally curated by none other than Roberto Viernes, master sommelier.
