Sony screens its newest sets, with Earth-friendly and energy-saving features

With the trend in televisions leaning toward bigger and brighter displays, Sony is bringing to light an often overlooked element in the industry: energy efficiency. With its XEL-1 and new Bravia “Eco” televisions, Sony ventures into new technologies that allow for maximum screen quality and minimum power waste. at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Sony made the U.S. debut of its XEL-1 TV, the first television to utilize Organic Light Emitting Diode displays. This slim, compact 11-inch model had been in the works at Sony for more than 10 years, and it captures all the advantages of the the new technology. and it’s up to 40 percent more efficient per panel inch than a conventional LCD display.

“Not only does technology change the form factor of television, it delivers flawless picture quality that will soon become the standard against which all TVs are measured,” says randy Waynick, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Home Products Division.

This year, Sony debuted another milestone in “conservative” TV viewing. The new Bravia vE5 series reduces power consumption with a new Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. it also has an innovative “Presence Sensor,” which turns off the TV when it senses that no one is in the TV’s vicinity. a light sensor also adjusts the TV’s backlight depending on the lighting of a room, which saves energy.
