Modernist furniture at new Ala Moana store

Who says loyalty is a thing of the past? The Modernist designs of Charles and Ray Eames, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Isamu Noguchi and Eero Saarinen are as prized today as when many of their home furnishing designs were introduced in the early half of the 20th century.

Problem is, the original pieces are in short supply, and rather than chasing them down at the occasional auction, homeowners rely on Design Within Reach to bring style to their living spaces.

Studio proprietor Curtis Lee said homeowners have been happy to step through the doors and cocoon themselves in Saarinen’s Womb Chair, which first came into the world in 1948; Arne Jacobsen’s Swan and Egg chairs (1958); or stretch out on Le Corbusier’s LC4 Chaise Lounge (1928). Lee said he loves hearing from clients, some in their 60s, who have had Eames chairs for 30 to 40 years and can now replace them.

“They are thrilled to see the pieces are still around today and still relevant today,” Lee said.

The works are fully licensed classics manufactured by the companies holding the license to the original designs, ensuring each piece meets the original specifications of the designers.

In addition to the classic pieces, there are contemporary beds, chairs, tables and lighting by Niels Bendtsen, Bruno Rain-aldi, Philippe Starck, Wiel Arets, Marcel Wanders and other designers whose work fits DWR’s clean-lined, modern aesthetic.

Lee said the company had been shipping a lot of the pieces to Hawaii prior to opening, but a showroom that allows people to see, sit and touch is ideal for commitment phobes. True comfort, after all, means becoming one with that perfect chair.
